How Many Grams in a Tablespoon of Olive Oil?
1 level US tablespoon of olive oil weighs about 13.5 g, and a teaspoon about 4.5 g. So 2 tablespoons ≈ 27 g and 3 tablespoons ≈ 40.5 g. Convert any amount below.
Oil is lighter than water — and than most people guess
A level US tablespoon of olive oil weighs about 13.5 g, noticeably less than the 14.8 g a tablespoon of water weighs. Oil is roughly 8% less dense than water, which is exactly why it floats on top of vinegar in a dressing. If you've been logging olive oil as "15 g per tablespoon", you've been over-counting slightly.
The bigger source of error isn't the density — it's free-pouring. An unmeasured "glug" from the bottle is commonly 2–3 tablespoons, not one. If the amount matters (dressings, baking, tracking), pour into the spoon or straight onto a scale.

- Should the tablespoon be level or heaped?
- Level. Recipes and nutrition figures assume a level spoon — a heaped tablespoon of olive oil can weigh 1.5–2 times as much. Fill the spoon, then sweep the excess off with a straight edge.
- Is a UK or Australian tablespoon the same as a US tablespoon?
- Not quite. A US tablespoon is 14.8 ml (about 13.5 g of olive oil); the UK/metric tablespoon is 15 ml (about 13.7 g) — close enough to ignore. The Australian tablespoon is 20 ml (about 18.3 g), a third bigger, so scale Australian recipes accordingly.
- How many grams is 2 tablespoons of olive oil?
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil is about 27 grams.
- How many tablespoons is 50g of olive oil?
- 50 grams of olive oil is about 3¾ tablespoons (50 ÷ 13.5 = 3.7).
- Do all cooking oils weigh the same per tablespoon?
- Very nearly. Olive, vegetable, canola and sunflower oil all weigh about 13.5 g per US tablespoon — the difference between them is under 2%, too small to matter in a recipe.
- Why does a tablespoon of oil weigh less than a tablespoon of water?
- Oil is about 8% less dense than water — the same volume simply contains less mass. That's also why oil floats on water.
