Honey — Measurement Converter

1 cup of honey weighs about 340 g. Half a cup is 170 g, a tablespoon about 21.3 g, and a full cup is 12 ounces on a scale.

💡 Tip: Lightly oil the cup or spoon first and honey slides right out instead of sticking. It's heavier than water at about 340 g per cup.

Honey weighs more than you would guess (and sugar swaps)

Because honey is about 80% sugar, it is dense: a cup tips the scale at roughly 340g, nearly half again as heavy as the same cup of water. That is also why a tablespoon is a hefty 21g. To stop it sticking, lightly oil the cup or spoon and it slides straight out.

Replacing sugar with honey? Use about ¾ cup honey per cup of sugar, cut other liquids by 3–4 tablespoons, add a pinch of baking soda to balance the acidity, and drop the oven temperature 25°F so it does not over-brown.

How honey compares with other syrups & spreads

At 340 g per cup, honey is the heaviest of the 10 syrups & spreads charted here — 325% heavier per cup than marshmallow fluff, the lightest at 80 g.

Substituting by volume shifts the weight: a cup of molasses in place of honey is about 3 g lighter, so convert to grams before swapping.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is a tablespoon of honey?
About 21.3 g per tablespoon — there are 16 tablespoons in a cup.
How many grams is 1 cup of honey?
1 cup of honey is about 340g (12 ounces), and 2 cups is 680g. Honey is dense, so it weighs far more than a cup of water.
How many grams in a tablespoon of honey?
About 21g per tablespoon; ¼ cup is about 85g.
How much honey replaces 1 cup of sugar?
Use about ¾ cup of honey for each cup of sugar. Also reduce the other liquids by 3–4 tablespoons, add a pinch of baking soda, and lower the oven by 25°F (honey browns faster).
Why is honey heavier than water?
Honey is a concentrated sugar solution — roughly 80% sugar — so it is denser than water. A cup weighs about 340g versus 236g for water.
How many ounces is 1 cup of honey?
About 12 ounces by weight (340 grams).
Why do my numbers differ slightly?
Viscosity depends on temperature. Warm syrup flows into the corners of a cup and cold syrup leaves gaps behind, and a sticky film always stays in the cup — which is why weighing straight into the bowl is easier.
